Cheerful celebration of Cervantes Aniversary

Amable Sánchez told the story of Cervantes in a crowded auditorium

A book and a flower, in Cervantes Aniversary, in its second edition, was celebrated last April 21st 2006 at the Cultural Center of ther Francisco Marroquín University.

The event was based on the novel of Don Quixote de la Mancha, and was targeted to a youth audience of 9th and 10th grades.  In it, the students went to a lecture given by Doctor Ambable Sánchez Torres on the books history and the life of its author.

They also participated in cheerful and educational workshops on reading skills, clay modeling and kite making.

A book and a flower, coordinated by Pierina Piedra Santa, is complemented by Sawdust Rugs, activity focused on Guatemalan traditions, with Amelia Lau, author of the book Sawdust Rugs, in which she tells the story of a Chinese Guatemalan family during Easter Week at La Antigua Guatemala.  This activity was held on April 18th and 19th.

Both events main goal was to promote reading habits on students through cultural, educational, playful activities.  There was also a book fair in which the participating editorials were Norma, Santillana, Piedra Santa, Artemis y Edinter, Fondo de Cultura Económica, ETC Ediciones and Time Life, among others.

The participating schools in A book and a flower at Cervantes Anivesary  were: Colegio Ciudad Vieja, Colegio Verbo, Colegio Capouilliez, Colegio Monte María, Colegio Evelyn Rogers, Colegio Americano de Guatemala, Colegio Monte Carmelo, Colegio Goodman, Colegio Internacional, Colegio Internacional Montessori, Colegio Guatemala de la Asunción.
