Floating lantern contest, at the UFM Library

The contest inscription ends Monday February 12, at 6:00 p.m..

«Constructing and releasing floating lanterns in lakes and rivers is a very ancient tradition in diverse Asian countries. Often, its meaning is bound to death; nevertheless, it also has a meaning of being a thankful act; the lanterns are a symbol of luck, renovation and hope. At the Ludwig von Mises Library we want to take that symbolism to create a space where people share with others the pleasure of constructing works that are not eternal and to contemplate the light that comes from these works», said Adelaida Loukota when announcing the floating lantern contest that will be celebrated at the Ludwig von Mises Library, of Universidad Francisco Marroquín, next February 13th of 2007 at 6:30 p.m.

Objective

This contest’s main objective is to stimulate the design and construction of an original floating lantern, whose structure is aesthetically pleasant at sight and, simultaneously, resistant to the environment where it will be released.   We are expecting the participation of students, university professors, administrative personnel, relatives, friends, and any person who accepts the challenge, so that we are all united in this activity and we share our ideas.

The requirements for the lights are:

Prefabricated lanterns will not be allowed.  2. In order to preserve the good health of fish, frogs, and other inhabitants of the pond, toxic substances like oils, alcohol or other types of fuels cannot be used. 3. The size of the lantern can not exceed 50 cm in length, 50 cm wide, 50 cm of stop or 50 cm of diameter. The inscription to the contest is free and open to everyone.
