Honoring Milton Friedman

In order to celebrate the life and the work of the eminent economist and winner of the Nobel Prize, Milton Friedman, next January 29th will be declared the Milton Friedman Day. Consequently, numerous organizations in the world, including Universidad Francisco Marroquín will be united in a great intellectual celebration.

Milton Friedman was a champion in promoting the values of free market economics and is considered, by many, the most influential economist at the end of the 20th century.  He died last November 16th of 2006, at the age of 94.

Friedman was an inspiring friend of Universidad Francisco Marroquín, where he had an honoris causa doctoral degree.  At the UFM’s Business School there is an auditorium named after him, and a terrace named after his wife, Rose.  At our Business School, his image presides over a freedom champions mural. Milton Friedman donated the UFM the rights to his film Free to Choose, in Spanish; and the videos are available to the general public at our
New Media Digital Resources Center. Friedman
said that «the UFM is a wonderful and little common example.  In few years it has been placed between the leading universities of Latin America, with a very important influence in the region».

«Milton Friedman will be remembered by us and by those who know and understand his valuable contributions to free society.  It was an honor to know him and to have been associated with him.  At Universidad Francisco Marroquín we keep very dear memories of him and his visit to Guatemala in 1978.  Doctor Friedman was very generous when talking about our university and we are deeply in debt with him for his public commentaries towards us.  His beliefs and ideas are taught in our classrooms.  In June of this year we named the Auditorium at Business School after Milton Friedman.  We are sorry that he is no longer with us. His memory will be perpetuated and appreciated in this university», said the President, Giancarlo Ibárgüen S., when he knew about his death last November of 2006.

The celebrationAs an axis of the tribute, we hope that the Milton Friedman Day will be a day of debates, where universities and other organizations explore, with their students, the role that free trade and economic growth had in improving people’s quality of life and expanding business opportunities everywhere in the world.  The students would have to debate the relation there is between economic freedom proposed by Friedman and personal and political freedom.  The subjects to debate will be proposed by outstanding economists and by the editorial team of the magazine The Economist, informed the
Foundation for Teaching Economics.

The Milton Friedman Day will also be observed in online binnacles and discussions, many of them organized by The Economist and Free to Choose Media.  Journalists of the magazine will moderate the discussions in which outstanding economists and civil employees will participate.

That day, at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time, PBS will transmit the public premiere of The Power of Choice: The Life and Ideas of Milton Friedman, documentary that was already
at Universidad Francisco Marroquín in December of 2006.  This documentary shows the extraordinary life and the visionary ideas of the Nobel Prize winner.  It was produced by Free to Choose Media and it shows the viewers the magnitude of the influence that the legendary economist had in the modern world.

Please consult the calendar of events,
