The big opera gala titled Luces y Escenas de Las bodas de Fígaro y Don Giovanni, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was presented at the Juan Bautista Gutiérrez Auditórium, of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín, last September 21st 2006.

The president of the Organización para las Artes Francisco Marroquín, Geraldina Baca-Spross, explained that, notable international performers participated at the gala, such as Luis Girón May, the Orquesta Clásica de Guatemala, directed by Francis Graffeo.  Ricardo del Carmen Fortuny was the assistant musical director.

«For this concert, the selected scenes were the most important ones, those that make the essence of each masterpiece of the universal opera art in several voice combinations, from solos to complex and big sextets, ending with the famous scenes of both plays», said Baca-Spross.

» Las Bodas de Fígaro, is a cheerful, lively, satirical play with political references and intrigues.  It was written in 1786 and performed successfully in Vienna.  When it is presented in its integral form, it lasts four hours.  Don Giovanni, on the other hand, is a musical drama where tragedy and comedy picture the deepness and darkness of human feelings, with cheerful strokes.  It is known as the biggest play in the musical art ever written.  It was opened in Prague in 1787.   Its original duration is three hours.  Both are performed in Italian», added Orpafm’s president.

The concert had a total duration of two hours, plus a 20 minute break, that allowed the audience an intense connection with the composer and his music, framed in an unusual and contemporary scenery.

For a visual and esthetic environment of the operas, the garden clubs Club Jardín de Guatemala, Club de Jardinería Arte en Flor and Círculo Floral de Guatemala interpreted, in flowers, La Flauta Mágica, Las Bodas de Fígaro and Don Giovanni, respectively, at the Auditorium’s lobby.
