Law, Freedom and West in Exploring Freedom

Law, Freedom and Western Development was the theme of the XXI colloquy Exploring Freedom, organized by the Universidad Francisco Marroquín and the Liberty Fund.  It was celebrated from August 24th to 27th 2006.

During the same one the discussions were on the western distinctive characteristic, the role of the church, the role of law, the interaction between politics and culture, the origins of the entrepreneurial role, and the explanation of the Western development.

The participants were Alfredo Bullard and Enrique Pasquel, from Perú; Noah Clarke, from Arizona; Pablo da Silveira from Uruguay; Otto Guevara from Costa Rica; Martín Krause and Eduardo Strodeur from Argentina; María Elena Martínez from México; Francisco Plaza from Florida; Julián Sánchez from Washington, D.C.; and Gregory Schmidt from Illinois.  From Guatemala Ottavio Benfatto, Ronald Flores and Warren Orbaugh participated.  Ana Gisela Castillo, from the UFM’s Law School conducted the discussions; the observers were Fernando Monterroso, ex president of this house of studies; and Pedro Trujillo, director of the UFM’s Institute of Political Studies and International Relations.

The series Exploring Freedom, conducted by Lucy Martínez-Mont, is part a program from the President’s office and the
Liberty Fund, to promote the Socratic dialogues in a free environment.

On Friday 25th, some participants made a visit to the UFM campus where they visited the Popol Vuh Museum, the Academic Building and its Socratic Wing, the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz bookstore and the work done at the New Media Digital Resources Center.
