Online journalism, theme of forum

As a consequence of the Pulitzer awards for online journalism, the American Guatemalan Institute (IGA) organized a forum with Meir Finkel, dean of the Comunication Sciences School at Galileo University; Gustavo Bracamonte, director of the Comunication Sciences School at the San Carlos University; and Luis Figueroa, member of the Social Economic Studies Center (CEES) and columnist at Prensa Libre.

During the same one, the discussion was on the characteristics of online journalism, specially the ones in common with analogue journalism, such as commitment with precision, objectivity and impartiality.

Also, the properties that make it different were discussed, such as the combination of written language, images and sounds; its immediateness, interactivity and others.

The assisting audience had the opportunity to make questions and interchange ideas with the forum members.

The Pulitzer prizes, in honor of the journalist Joseph Pulitzer, are handed by the Columbia University, in categories like research journalism, comments and cartoons among others; and in areas like photography, fiction and history, among others.

The forum was held at the Walt Whitman Library at IGA, on Friday May 12th 2006.
