Presenting the David Hume´s Ethics Center

Astrid Ayala, Roberto Salinas, Giancarlo Ibárgüen S. and Roberto Blum, at the forum.

The David Hume Ethics Center of the Francisco Marroquín University is conceived as a socratic forum on the human experience and is dedicated to the study of the ethics evolution.  The same one was presented on January 18th, 2005 with a forum on David Hume, his work and its relevance in the 21st century.

The forum´s participants were Astrid Ayala, from the Economic Sciences School; Roberto Blum, coordinator of the Center; Giancarlo Ibárgüen S., UFM´s President; and Roberto Salinas León, president of the Mexico Business Forum.  Shortly you will be able to see the forum here.

Ibárgüen explained that the Center aims to provide an open and permanent space of reflection and discussion on the human experience, the ethical values and the ethics in a society of free and responsible persons; to spread the ethical principles of a society of free and responsible persons; to explore, to discuss and to consolidate the relations between ethics, economy and social cooperation; to constitute a permanent forum of subjects related to ethics; to serve like a source of electronic documentation, in Spanish, on ethics, economy and social cooperation.

He announced that the Center will have its own web site and one of the projects is to translate The Foundations of Morality, by Henry Hazlitt; and chapter 5 of ethics genealogy, from Invariances, by Robert Nozick.  Also to celebrate symposiums with professors, students and UFM´s alumni.

Ibárgüen observed that many of Hume´s ideas are present in the 21st century, as he presents a specific theory of the moral foundations, not a prescriptive or normative code, which is very important for a laic university.

In his intervention, Roberto Salinas explained that although some criticize Hume´s skepticism, part of his contribution to the study of ethics is that this same skepticism is used, not like an instrument of philosophical argument, but like an instrument to moderate positions.

Hume invites us to share philosophy with daily life´s vulgar aspects and, in this sense, the relevance of the Center is indeed, to cultivate a robust sense of reality when we speak of ethics, said Salinas, when observing that it is not necessary to fall in deceit trying to discover every truth in the world with our limited knowledge and human limits.  To recognize the limits of our failure is a very important effort while discussing vital subjects in our society, he added.

Astrid Ayala talked about the feelings in the context of Hume´s work, the laws related to justice, property and the fulfillment of promises.  Also about the evolutionary process that gives origin to ethics.  Blum, on the other hand, emphasized that Hume is not a person who claimed to have the truth and that, on the contrary, he had the humility that true liberal ones must have; and that he raises a tolerant position that recognizes some conflict between reason and feelings.

In the name of the University´s Directive Council, president Ibárgüen thanked Ray Dawson, fundamental sponsor of the Center, as well as collaborators like Ramiro Alfaro, Roberto Blum, Erika and Jens Bornholt, Lissa Hanckel, Margarita de Urrea, Wenceslao Giménez-Bonet and Astrid Ayala, since they made the activities and the Center´s growth possible.

The presentation of the David Hume´s Ethics Center concluded with a cocktail at the UFM´s Künstler Kaffee.
