Sawdust rugs, at the UFM

Illustration of the book  Sawdust Rugs by Amelia Lau

Sawdust Rugs is the title that Amelia Lau gives to the educational and literary event that will be celebrated at the Francisco Marroquín University on April 19th and 20th at the Cultural Center of this house of studies.

The event Sawdust Rugs is for children of elementary school in fourth and fifth grades.  During the same one, children will be able to participate with the book author Amelia Lau in reading, music and sawdust rugs workshops.

This activity is related to the second edition of A book and a flower in Cervantes Anniversary, an event based on the lecture of Don Quixote de la Mancha. Both events main purpose is to promote reading habits on students through cultural, playful and educational activities.  There will also be a book fair in which editorials like Norma, Santillana, Piedra Santa, Artemis Edinter, Fondo de Cultura Económica, ETC Ediciones and Time Life will participate.

For the activities several invitations were sent to educational centers in Guatemala City.  Among the confirmed participating schools are Colegio Americano de Guatemala, Internacional Montessori, Guatemalteco Bilingüe, Alejandro von Humbolt, Colegio Alemán, Príncipe de Asturias, Inglés Americanoand Evelyn Rogers.  Ten schools are programmed for each day of the event, as well as a maximum of 600 students and teachers are expected.

Workshops on reading stimulation and the importance of illustrating in the formation of the reading habit will be given to teachers.  There will also be workshop for children books illustrations given to designers, illustrators and general public, held from April  19th to 21st.
