Sixteenth Freedom Colloquy

The 16th Freedom Colloquy was celebrated with the participation of professors, executives and friends of the Francisco Marroquín University, under the conduction of Fernando Monterroso V. from Friday 28th until Saturday 29th July 2006.

The Freedom Colloquies form part of a series that is celebrated at the UFM to discuss academic topics.  The first one was held on December 2003 and the series is part of an integral program of the UFM President Office that includes Socratic dialogues, colloquies with school directors and the series Exploring Freedom, inaugurated on December 2005.  The 15th Freedom Colloquy was celebrated on March 2006.  The Freedom Colloquies are conducted by Fernando Monterroso V., who is a UFM fiduciary, and was its President from 1988 until 2003, and currently teaches economy.

In this occasion the participants were Liza María Cifuentes, from the Presidents Office; Alejandra Rivas, Otto Contreras and Erick Pérez, from the Henry Hazlitt Center;  Harry Díaz and Danilo Mazariegos, from the Mesoamerican University; Jorge Samayoa and Pedro España, from New Media; Santiago Fernández from EPRI; Hector Lau, from Gutiérrez Machado; Adelaida Loukota, from the Ludwig von Mises Library; Pierina Piedrasanta, from the General Secretary; and Roberto Quevedo, from the Architecture School.

Surrounding the theme of Social Cooperation Logic, the following works and themes were discussed: De Robinson Crusoe a Viernes, by Manuel F. Ayau; Human Society, Interchange in Society, The Division of Labor and The Gains from Trade, by Ludwig von Mises; The Prisoners Dilemma, Telling Hawks from Doves, by Matt Ridley; and Associations in Civil Life, by Alexis Tocqueville and The Law, by Bastiat.
