UFM  celebrated commencement act

The commencement act, at Universidad Francisco Marroquín, had the participation of 208 graduates who received their corresponding degrees.  From the total of graduates, 31 received their titles with academic distinctions of Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude.  The act was celebrated last Saturday May 5th of 2007 at the central garden of the University.  

During the act, Professor Robert J. Barro received an honoris causa doctorate degree in Social Sciences, and his presentation was made by doctor Julio H. Cole.

The academic procession, lead by UFM’s President, Giancarlo Ibárgüen S., made its entrance at the compass of the notes of the Va pensiero.  After the graduates, the Board of Directives and the Deans and Directors occupied their places Guatemala’s National anthem was heard.  The words in name of the graduates were spoken by Edwin Francisco Xol Yalibat, Magna Cum Laude, from the Economic Sciences School.

The Deans and Directors of Schools and Departments gave the following titles: Magister artium, Magister scientiae, masters, architects, surgeons dentists, engineers, lawyers and notaries, nutritionists, psychologists, educators, business managers, economists, doctors and surgeons as well as Baccalaureus artium and Baccaleureus scientiae.

Robert J. Barro is an economic adviser at the New York Federal Reserve Bank; he is a Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics at Harvard University; coeditor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics; and Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution in Stanford University.

He is also an honorary dean at China Economics and Management Academy, at the Central University of Beijing; honorary professor of the University of Tsinghua, in China; Harris Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Clemson University and he received the Adam Smith Award from the Association of Private Enterprise Economists.

Barro is author of Macroeconomics: A Modern Approach; Economic Growth; and Nothing is Sacred: Economic Ideas for the New Millennium, among others. He has a B.S. in Physics, from the California Institute of Technology; and Ph.D. in Economy, from Harvard University.
