El Mirador basin: archeology and conservation

Consolidation process of structure 34, at El Mirador

The new investigations at El Mirador´s  basin have revealed abundant data about the origins and the cultural complexity of the region, as well as the adaptation forms that allowed the habitants overcome the environmental and economic difficulties, and the processes that lead to the abandonment or colapse of the zone.

The result is a new opportunity to teach respect and appreciation of the mayan culture remains.  At the Popol Vuh Museum, in the Francisco Marroquín University, the known archeologist Richard Hansen will present the details of the proyect, that is developed under his direction,  on March 30 of 2006.  Contribution Q20, students Q10.

The multidisciplinary investigations take to a new dimension the importance of the mayan societies in the preclasic and subsecuent periods.  The exceptionally high housing concentration, compared to other patterns known in Petén, revealed by satelite imaging and field studies, is of great interest.

Taking into account the monumental architecture and art, the proyect
Mirador Basin  has taken conservation measures to expose and protect the mayan remains, new consolidation and conservation alternatives have been applied that can be used in other sites.

This conference is sponsored by Pollo Campero.
