In order to receive a doctorate honoris causa in Social Sciences, the economist Robert J. Barro visited Universidad Francisco Marroquín.

Last Friday May 4th, during the act honoring the distinguished graduates at Universidad Francisco Marroquín, Robert J. Barro received a UFM necktie and the diploma that credits him as Visiting Professor of this house of studies, from the President, Giancarlo Ibárgüen S.  The following day, Barro was invested as doctor honoris causa, by President Ibárgüen with the aid of President emeritus, Manuel F. Ayau.  The laureate came to the UFM accompanied by his wife, Rachel McCleary, author of Dictating Democracy: Guatemala and the of End Violent Revolution.

Robert J. Barro is an economic adviser at the New York Federal Reserve Bank; he is a Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics at Harvard University; coeditor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics; and Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution in Stanford University.

He is also an honorary dean at China Economics and Management Academy, at the Central University of Beijing; honorary professor of the University of Tsinghua, in China; Harris Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Clemson University and he received the Adam Smith Award from the Association of Private Enterprise Economists.

Barro is author of Macroeconomics: A Modern Approach; Economic Growth; and Nothing is Sacred: Economic Ideas for the New Millennium, among others. He has a B.S. in Physics, from the California Institute of Technology; and Ph.D. in Economy, from Harvard University.

Robert J. Barro was interviewed by Eduardo Smith, of Prensa Libre, and the interview was published last May 7th of 2007.
