Freshmen students from the School of Architecture of Universidad Francisco Marroquín, accompanied by professor Warren Orbaugh, met with UFM’s President Giancarlo Ibárgüen S.

During the encounter, the Director talked about the UFM’s mission that is to teach and diffuse the ethical, legal and economical principles of a society of free and responsible persons; and the motivations of the founders of the University.

He also talked about the commitment of this house of studies with excellence, which is defined as “a superior quality that makes people or things worthy of singular esteem or estimation”. President Ibárgüen explained that for this house of studies, academic excellence is “the quality of ideas, principles and performance of those who, like professors or students, are habitually located over the simple material and routine fulfillment of their duties, constituting before all a live example of coherent life”. Excellence understood this way “is only possible in a frame of freedom, competition and respect”.

This commitment with the excellence is contained in a document that, as a “contract with students and professors” has been drafted in Universidad Francisco Marroquín. Ibárgüen also spoke about the importance of the evaluations of university professors and the responsibility of the students.

As examples of the success in the search of excellence, the President showed the students some activities that are made at the UFM, such as the services of the Ludwig von Mises Library, the New Media Digital Resources Center, Museo Popol Vuh and the Arboretum. He also told them about the new tools in MiU, such as the blog, chat and Wikipedia.

Before concluding the meeting President Ibárgüen listen to commentaries from the students and answered their questions. The encounter was celebrated last Wednesday February 28th of 2007 at the auditorium of the School of Businesses of the UFM.
