Psychology: early identification of development deficiencies

The event titled The alert signs in the early identification of development deficiencies, supported by the Psycholoy School of the Francisco Marroquín University, was organized by the Psychopedagogical Intervention and Diagnostic Clinical Center, that was held in the Friedrich A. Hayek Auditorium of this house of studies, last March 9 of 2006.

«Professionals in the medicine area as well as psychologists, psychiatrists, infant development therapists, nurses and students of the Psychology School of this Univerisity, assisted.  There were also representatives of Hospitals like El Pilar, Roosevelt, IGGS, the Neurological Institute of Guatemala and institutions dedicated to the children´s development in Honduras, El Salvador and Panama», Andrea de Licht, director of the UFM´s Viktor Frankl Clinic, informed.

The event coordinator, Bárbara Mejía, explained the need to have adecuate systems to detect, in an early stage, the children´s development deficiecies, so that the treatment and prognosis result favorable.  Dr. Frances Glascoe, from the Vanderbilt University, presented the system
First Signs, a formal system proposed to be used in Guatemala.  The participants received information and the necesary instruction on this instrument.

National expositors also participlated like, doctors Carlos Orellana and Manuel Calderón, and Emilio Quinto and Patricia Castellanos, who introduced the subjects.  Marta de Zaid closed the event and Bárbara Mejía coordinated the presentations.

«The participants received a training certificate from the Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  This qualifies them to use the tools and instruments explained during the course, in the professional practice, at an institutional and private level», Licht explained.
